Is the ab wheel the GOAT of core exercises?
I've been diving deep into core training lately, and I keep coming back to the ab wheel. Is it just me, or does this simple piece of equipment deserve more recognition? I've seen a ton of debate about the best core exercises, but the ab wheel seems to be the underdog that packs a serious punch.
For those unfamiliar, the ab wheel primarily targets the rectus abdominis, but it also engages the obliques, hip flexors, and even the shoulders and lats to some extent. One thing that I love about it is the way it forces you to stabilize your entire core throughout the movement. If you think about it, it's like a dynamic plank. You really have to focus on maintaining a neutral spine and avoiding excessive lumbar flexion, which can lead to injury. This makes it a great tool for developing not just strength, but also awareness of your core positioning.
In terms of programming, I've been incorporating the ab wheel into my PPL routine. I typically perform 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps, focusing on slow, controlled movements. Sometimes I even do them as a finisher after my main lifts to really tax my core. I find that using an ab wheel challenges my core in a way that traditional exercises like planks or sit-ups just don't. And let's be real, the feeling of rolling out and then pulling yourself back up is oddly satisfying!
I've also read some studies suggesting that core strength can directly impact your performance in other lifts. This makes sense, considering a strong core contributes to better stability during squats and deadlifts. Plus, there's the added benefit of it helping with injury prevention. No one wants to get sidelined because of a weak core!
So, for anyone else who uses the ab wheel, do you agree that it's the GOAT of core exercises? Or do you think there are better options out there? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences with this little device.
Would love to compare notes on rep ranges, volume, and how you integrate it into your programming!
