What's your favorite way to stay motivated during marathon training?

TL;DR: Staying motivated in marathon training involves setting small goals, mixing up routes, and engaging with the running community.

Training for a marathon can be a rollercoaster of emotions! Some days, you feel like a champion ready to conquer the world, and other days, you just want to hit snooze on your alarm. I've been running for about 5 years now, and I've picked up some amazing strategies to keep the motivation high!

One thing that really helps me is setting small, achievable goals throughout my training cycle. Instead of focusing solely on the finish line, I break my training into manageable milestones, like hitting a certain pace in my long runs or completing a specific number of weekly miles. This not only keeps things fresh but also allows me to celebrate those little victories along the way!

I also find that mixing up my routes and incorporating some fun gear can keep my runs exciting. Whether it's trying out a new pair of shoes or exploring a different trail, variety can be the spice of life! And don't forget about community, running groups or challenges on Strava can bring that extra motivation and accountability. What keeps you pumped during your marathon training? Let's share tips and keep each other inspired!

Love the idea of trying new routes! I recently discovered a vegan-friendly caf茅 on a new trail. Rewarding myself with a treat after a long run makes it feel worthwhile. Plus, it fuels my next workout!

I love the community aspect too! Joining local running groups was a game-changer for me. Nothing like running with others to keep you motivated and push you further

This is solid advice! I also track my mileage to stay accountable. It's motivating to see those numbers go up, and it helps me plan my nutrition around those runs.

I love the idea of rewarding yourself with new gear! I like to make running fuel treats for after long runs. It keeps me excited and gives me something to look forward to. Chocolate protein muffins, anyone?

Honestly, running is just a fancy way of saying 'let's be tired together.' Sometimes I just chug coffee and sprint to the finish line. Who says it has to be a long run?

27
u/caffeineconnoisseur

I feel like I need an IV of caffeine just to start training for a marathon. Running is great, but sometimes you need that extra push. A little coffee before those long runs works wonders for me.

25
u/caffeineconnoisseur

Coffee before running is a vibe! I love using a pre-workout blend too, makes a difference in my energy levels. I feel like I can conquer the world after a cup. 馃槀

25
u/caffeineconnoisseur

Facts! I always say, make sure to include rest days and some easy runs. Otherwise, you risk burnout or worse, injury. Caffeine helps, but it won't fix that!

u/gymbagorganizer

I'm all about keeping my gear organized! I have a specific spot for my running shoes and gear to help me get out the door quicker. It's a small change but helps minimize excuses on those tough days.

u/rn_who_lifts

Don't forget hydration! Staying hydrated during training is crucial. It's easy to overlook, but being even slightly dehydrated can really affect your performance. I keep a water bottle with me at all times!

21
u/calorietracker99

Tracking is key! I use MacroFactor to keep an eye on my nutrition during training. It helps me plan my meals around those longer runs so I'm not running on empty. A solid pre-run meal makes a world of difference. It's all about the little details!

20
u/rippedandfitmom

I agree! I also love sharing my progress on social media. It keeps me accountable and my friends cheer me on, which makes it even more fun. I even got a few friends inspired to start running too

4
u/gymbagorganizer

True! Planning meals around training is super important. I keep a running log of what I eat and how it affects my performance. It helps me tweak things to find what works best.

u/midwest_lifter

Running is all about consistency! I always tell my clients that even 20 minutes is better than nothing. Just keep moving, no matter how slow. It's not just about the miles but building that habit.

0
u/midwest_lifter

It's interesting how everyone approaches motivation differently. I always tell my clients to focus on form and breathing. It's amazing how much easier runs get when you're not fighting against your own mechanics.

20
u/zone2nerd

It's cool to see everyone's strategies. I track my pace and heart rate religiously. Knowing my stats keeps me motivated, especially when I can see improvements over time. Plus, seeing my VO2 max go up feels like I'm leveling up.

18
u/depressedlifter

I hear ya about the rollercoaster of emotions. Some days I feel like a gazelle, and others it's like I'm running through molasses. It's all about finding that balance and not being too hard on yourself. Every mile counts.

15
u/zone2nerd

One last tip, don't forget to focus on recovery. Incorporating stretching and cross-training can help prevent burnout. Overtraining is a real risk, so balance is important.

13
u/runningfromcardio

Honestly, marathon training sounds exhausting. I'm more of a sprint person. How do you guys even manage those long runs without losing ur mind? I'll stick to my coffee and short sprints, thanks.

12
u/rippedandfitmom

Totally relate to the snooze button struggle! As a mom of two, my morning runs can feel impossible some days. I find that involving my kids helps a lot! We have little family runs where they ride their bikes next to me, and it makes it so much fun!

11
u/6footdadbod

Man, I hate long runs too. Why run for hours when you could sprint for a few minutes? I get that it's important for marathon training, but I'd take a good sprint session over a long run any day. Where's the thrill in just... running?

9
u/rippedandfitmom

Totally agree! I make it a family affair. My kids love to join me on shorter runs, and we make it fun with little challenges, like who can spot the most squirrels! It keeps me motivated and adds a fun twist to training.

8
u/happygains

Yes! Mixing up routes is key. i found a trail near my place that has some killer views, and it makes all the difference. Running feels less like a chore when the scenery is beautiful!

8
u/powerliftingmama

Remember to listen to your body too! I made the mistake of ignoring some signs last year, and it cost me weeks of training. Recovery is just as important as the runs themselves.

8
u/saltyngl

Honestly, I'm more of a lifting guy. But I get it, running is its own kind of torture. Like, how do people keep going? If I don't lift, I'd probably just sleep all day.

8
u/squatmotivator

A solid support system can really turn things around! I've been dealing with a tough patch in training, but chatting with friends about it has made a big difference. It's wild how sharing struggles can lighten the load

8
u/6footdadbod

My secret is audiobooks! I save the juicy ones for long runs so I have something to look forward to. It helps the miles fly by, even if my legs feel like they're made of lead. Plus, I'm learning something new every time!

7
u/cardioqueen89

I completely agree with breaking down goals! It's so much easier to stay motivated when you have smaller milestones to celebrate. I also keep a running log of my progress, which helps me see how far I've come. Plus, nothing beats that feeling when you hit a new PR!

7
u/rippedandfitmom

Setting small goals is a game changer! I started running with my kids a few years back, and now we do family 5Ks together. It's awesome to share that passion, plus it keeps me accountable!

7
u/runningfromcardio

ngl, i hate long runs too. I prefer sprints, but I force myself to do them for marathon training. Why do they have to be so long? Like, can't we just run 1 mile and call it a day? Coffee should be a workout too!

6
u/depressedlifter

Facts! I've had days where I just don't wanna run. But sometimes just getting out the door is the hardest part. Once im out there, it usually feels great. If it's tough mentally, I throw in some favorite music or a podcast. It shifts my focus!

6
u/rn_who_lifts

Staying healthy is important, but finding balance is key! i'm a nurse, so I get how stressful life can be. Focusing on mental well-being during training is just as important as physical fitness. Take care of yourselves, everyone

6
u/cardioqueen89

I love your approach to setting small goals! For me, hitting a new long-run distance is super motivating. Just finished a 16-miler last week and felt like a rockstar! What's your next milestone?

5
u/gymbagorganizer

I also love to organize my running gear! Having everything ready to go keeps me excited to train. I even color-code my shoes based on routes and mileage. Sounds a bit extra, but it works for me.

4
u/gymratbutchill

Sometimes, I just get out there and run without a plan. It's refreshing to let loose and not worry about pace. Those are often my best runs, where I just enjoy the scenery and clear my mind.

4
u/runningfromcardio

Lol, I hate long runs too. Short sprints feel way more fun, but I guess we gotta do what we gotta do for that marathon. Coffee before runs? Life-changing. Keeps me awake at least!

4
u/gymratbutchill

I'm all for fun gear! Got a new pair of neon running shoes recently and let me tell you, they make me feel like I'm flying. It's amazing how much motivation can come from something as simple as new kicks.

4
u/zone2nerd

I track my heart rate during runs to see if I'm improving my fitness. It's a great way to gauge if I'm pushing myself enough or if I need to dial it back a bit. Also, zone 2 training is where it's at for endurance!

4
u/recipequeen44

Meal prepping has been a lifesaver during training. I make sure to prepare my favorite post-run snacks, like protein smoothies or energy bars, so I always have something ready to refuel. Plus, it keeps me from reaching for unhealthy snacks when I'm tired.

3
u/saltyngl

Yeah, I've been trying to set mini goals too, but some days I'm just like, 'Snooze button, please.' Gotta get my head back in the game. If I could turn my morning runs into a Netflix binge, I'd be set.

2
u/midwest_lifter

Mixing up routes is essential. I tell my clients to find new trails or paths nearby, it keeps the runs from feeling monotonous. Plus, different terrains can actually work different muscle groups, which can be a bonus for performance.

2
u/veganpowerlifter

I think a plant-based diet can support running too! I've noticed a huge difference in my energy levels since switching. It's all about finding what works for you, right?

2
u/recipequeen44

I love the idea of mixing it up! Variety is so important in keeping the routine fresh. I also like to meal prep for my runs. A good banana oatmeal muffin gives me just the right boost without feeling heavy. Plus, prepping snacks keeps me on track with nutrition.

2
u/calorietracker99

You're on point about tracking progress! i like using Strava to keep tabs on my runs and see my improvements over time. Plus, getting kudos from friends keeps me going, even on tough days.

1
u/cardioqueen89

I totally relate to the rollercoaster of emotions during training! One thing that keeps me going is visualizing the race day experience. Imagining the crowd, the adrenaline, and crossing that finish line gives me a boost when I'm feeling sluggish. Plus, I love setting those smaller goals too; they really help break up the monotony of long runs!

1
u/zone2nerd

Small goals are super effective! I track my progress with Strava and it gives me some awesome data insights. Seeing the improvements over time keeps my motivation high. Also, u can analyze your routes and performance metrics which is pretty satisfying!

32
u/veganpowerlifter

I can't emphasize nutrition enough. I meal prep vegan snacks that are packed with energy for those long runs. Dates with almond butter or energy balls are my go-to. What do you eat pre-run?

14
u/midwest_lifter

Mixing routes is smart! I like to find trails that have some elevation change to keep things interesting. Those hill sprints can be tough but they're worth it. Just remember to check your form to avoid injuries when you're pushing hard on new terrains.

29
u/gymbagorganizer

Those silly challenges sound great! I often organize fun runs where we dress up in costumes. It's a blast and keeps everyone engaged. Plus, who doesn't love a good photo op while running? It makes the hard work feel less serious.

27
u/rippedandfitmom

Absolutely! I found a running group that has kids' runs as well, so I can involve my kids while staying active. It makes it a family affair, which keeps me pumped.

17
u/zone2nerd

Totally, gear matters! i track my runs on Strava and honestly, seeing my progress there keeps me motivated. The data is such a great way to visualize improvements and it's so satisfying!

13
u/happygains

Loving the community aspect! I joined a running club last year, and the group runs have been such a boost. It's great to have friends to suffer through those long runs with, and the camaraderie keeps me motivated.

1
u/squatmotivator

You guys ever hear those motivational quotes during runs? They can be cringe, but sometimes I need that boost. Just a little push when my legs are screaming. Anyone else?

0
u/zone2nerd

Setting those small goals is crucial for progress tracking. In fact, research shows that people who set specific goals are more likely to achieve them. Using a training log or an app can also keep u accountable. You can analyze ur pace, distance, and even heart rate trends over time.

26
u/happygains

Yep, celebrating those small victories is the best! I remember hitting a new PR on my long run a few months ago. It felt so amazing to see the hard work paying off, and it really kept me motivated to keep pushing through the tough days. Running with friends has also been a game-changer for me!

8
u/powerliftingmama

I encourage my kids to stay active too, and they love joining me for family runs. We play little games along the way. It keeps them engaged and makes running a bonding experience instead of a chore.

17
u/6footdadbod

Mixing up routes is key! I love discovering new paths, it makes every run feel like an adventure. Plus, running through nature can lift your mood like nothing else. What's the best route you've found?

5
u/powerliftingmama

Having a solid support system is key! My kids come to my meets and cheer me on, it really lights a fire under me. It makes the whole training process feel less lonely when you've got loved ones cheering you on.

4
u/gymratbutchill

Mixing up routes is also a chance to find hidden gems in your area. I discovered a beautiful park trail last week, and it totally changed my mindset for the run! Exploring can really boost your motivation.

7
u/recipequeen44

I totally agree about mixing things up! I love to create themed meal preps to match my training schedule. If I have a tough run planned, I'll make sure I have a tasty, energy-packed meal ready. What are your favorite pre-run snacks?

u/powerliftingmama

I always tell my kids, fitness is a family affair! We set family fitness challenges at home, and it keeps us all engaged. It's fun to see them get competitive and chase those goals!

2
u/rn_who_lifts

Being part of a running community can make a huge difference! I joined a local group, and the support has been incredible. We hold each other accountable and celebrate each other's milestones, no matter how small. It feels great to have that camaraderie!

1
u/cardioqueen89

100% with you there! It's all about experimentation. I like incorporating different carbs pre-run to see how my body reacts. Always learning what gives me that edge.

3
u/6footdadbod

As a dad, I feel the pressure of juggling family and training. I try to fit in runs while my kids are at soccer practice. Multitasking like a boss! Plus, I sneak in a few dad jokes to keep the mood light.

1
u/depressedlifter

Running is great therapy, but some days it feels like dragging my feet through molasses. Seriously, I've had those runs where I'm like, 'Is this even cardio or am I just walking?'. But then I remind myself, progress is progress.

7
u/saltyngl

Ngl, I sometimes struggle with motivation too. I had a week where I hit snooze every day, but I went for a run anyway. Felt like trash at first, but hey, even bad runs count!

6
u/depressedlifter

i feel you on the rollercoaster. Some days, I run just to escape life for a bit. But when my mental health dips, it's hard to lace up those shoes. It's like, running is therapy but also a chore. You gotta find that balance. A long run can feel epic one day and torturous the next

6
u/rippedandfitmom

Absolutely! My kids love to run with me sometimes. We make it a family activity and it adds so much fun. Plus, their energy is contagious! We even set up mini-races in the backyard, and it's a blast. Those moments keep me excited about my own training

4
u/happygains

Totally! Finding joy in running makes such a difference. I started listening to upbeat playlists and found that it really amps up my mood during runs. There's something about a good beat that makes the miles fly by. 馃槉

1
u/gymratbutchill

I like to keep my runs lighthearted. I often run with friends and we joke around while pushing ourselves. It's way more fun that way! Sometimes we do silly challenges like 'who can run backward the longest' just to mix it up.

3
u/6footdadbod

I get that! I call those molasses days 'dad bod training' days. Just getting out there is a win! The dad life makes it tough sometimes, but I just focus on the little victories.

28
u/rn_who_lifts

It's crucial to listen to your body during training. If you're feeling worn out, taking a rest day can be more beneficial than pushing through. Self-care is just as important as those miles.

6
u/depressedlifter

I think it's normal to have days where you just don't want to go out. I've felt that way, and honestly, I've had runs where I almost quit halfway. But then I remind myself, even slow progress counts. Plus, running is my therapy

1
u/saltyngl

i just got a new pair of shoes that were super pricey but they were totally worth it! Running in them feels like running on clouds. It's wild how new gear can spark some motivation. I might be broke now, but at least I'm comfy while training.

1
u/runningfromcardio

Lol, right? Long runs feel like a punishment sometimes. I tried a new strategy where I break them up into intervals and it felt way more doable. Like, 10 minutes of running, 2 minutes of walking. It was still a workout but way less soul-crushing.

16
u/calorietracker99

Tracking progress helps with motivation too. I use apps to log my runs and it's super satisfying to see improvement over time. You can set reminders to keep you on track, and seeing those numbers go up is a nice confidence boost.

111
u/heavy_lifting_lover

u/happygains

That's a great idea! I love listening to uplifting podcasts while running. They keep me motivated and I often find myself smiling mid-run. It's like a double win, getting fit and feeling good at the same time.

2
u/caffeineconnoisseur

I find that a good cup of coffee before a run is key. It gives me that boost to get out the door and tackle those miles. Plus, it's like my little ritual before heading out. Can't beat that caffeine kick!

0
u/veganpowerlifter

Community is so crucial! I also love running with my plant-based crew. We share recipes for post-run meals, and it's cool to swap tips on how to refuel properly. Plus, the vegan power vibes keep everyone motivated and feeling good!

7
u/recipequeen44

I get that! But think of the long runs as a time to zone out and enjoy nature or even listen to some good tunes. I always tell my clients that it's about building endurance. Plus, the feeling of crossing that finish line makes it all worthwhile.

2
u/midwest_lifter

Good point about hydration! I recommend getting a water bottle that you can easily carry. Also, consider electrolyte drinks on long runs, they help with recovery big time.

1
u/cardioqueen89

I totally agree about setting small goals! I always break down my mileage into weekly targets, and it feels so good to check them off. Plus, it keeps the excitement alive when you're not just focusing on the big race day!

0
u/cardioqueen89

I love breaking up my marathon training into smaller goals too! It's amazing how much progress you can make when you focus on those mini milestones. Plus, the satisfaction of hitting a new pace or completing a long run is just unbeatable. Keep celebrating those wins!

0
u/squatmotivator

I read a quote once that said, 'Every run is a step closer to greatness.' It stuck with me and I repeat it on tough runs. It's cheesy, but it gives me that little push when I need it most.
