TMG for performance, is it worth the hype?

TL;DR: Is TMG worth it for performance, or just more supplement hype?

So I've been hearing a lot about trimethylglycine (TMG) and its supposed benefits for performance and recovery. Some folks say it can help with power output and reduce fatigue, while others are like, 'meh, it's just another supplement.' I've been lifting for a couple years now and I'm lowkey skeptical about all these new trends. Anyone here tried TMG? Did it actually help your lifts or was it just more hype? Let's break it down!

Quick thoughts:

  • TMG might help with homocysteine levels, which is cool but how does that translate to gains?
  • Do I need to be worried about the dose? I've seen anywhere from 500mg to 3g thrown around.
  • Any brand recommendations or should I just stick with my creatine and protein shakes?

Curious what the community thinks about this.

For real tho, creatine is king! If you want performance gains, stick with that. TMG seems more like an accessory. Unless you're a chem major, I'd save my money.

OMG, I love TMG in my pre-workout shake! It gives me that extra pump, and I feel like I can push through those last reps. I mix it with protein and a banana for a tasty boost! 🍌

You know, I've been lifting for years, and I always say: supplements can only do so much! My biggest gains came from solid training and eating right. Still, if you enjoy experimenting, go for TMG, but don't skip your greens!

Research on TMG is limited, but there are some studies linking it to improved power output. If you're lifting heavy, it might help with your 1RM on compound lifts. Just remember to monitor your body's response.

I've been using TMG for about a month now, and honestly, I think it helps with recovery. I noticed my lifts feeling a bit smoother, especially on those heavy days. As for dosage, I started at 1g and gradually worked up to 2g. It seems to be the sweet spot for me. Just make sure you're tracking how you feel!

I've tried TMG before, and honestly, I felt a slight boost in my endurance during high-rep sets. There are some studies suggesting it helps with muscle endurance and reduces fatigue, but it may vary from person to person. I'd say it's worth a shot if you're curious!

While some people rave about TMG, I find the evidence to be mixed at best. You're not going to see huge performance boosts just from adding it to your stack. Focus on the basics first: solid diet, proper sleep, and your training program. Supplementation should be secondary. Also, are you checking your homocysteine levels? That might be a more crucial indicator.

Honestly, recovery is key! TMG could help, but don't overlook rest days. I love yoga on my off days to help with soreness and just feel better overall!

If you're considering TMG, maybe combine it with beta-alanine or citrulline for some extra kick. Just be smart about your stacking! Sometimes, synergy between supplements can yield great results.

Bro, I feel like TMG is just another trendy supplement. If you want to optimize ur lifts, focus on good form and progressive overload instead! That's where the real gains come from.

TMG is definitely interesting. Some studies suggest it can help with performance by reducing fatigue and improving power output, especially in endurance athletes. But the evidence is still kinda mixed. If you already have a solid base with creatine and protein, maybe stick with what works for you

I find recovery is super important too! TMG may help, but don't underestimate the power of rest days. You could stack it with your post-workout nutrition for better recovery

i've been using TMG for a couple months, mainly for my calisthenics training. I haven't noticed a big difference, but my energy levels seem a bit more stable during workouts. But I'm also focused on my diet, so who knows what really helped.

I mean, there's always room for trial and error with supplements, but I'd personally stick to what's been proven! Just don't break the bank on every new trend that pops up.

There's evidence that TMG can help lower homocysteine levels, which is good for heart health. That said, I'm not sure how that translates directly to lifting performance. I'd focus on the basics: sleep, nutrition, and proven supplements like creatine and beta-alanine.

TMG can help lower homocysteine, which is good for heart health. But unless you're really low on it, I wouldn't prioritize it over your main supps. Focus on your programming first, then tweak the supplements if needed.

As a CrossFitter, I'm always on the lookout for anything that could help with recovery! TMG might be worth experimenting with, but I still think hydration and proper nutrition play the biggest roles. Make sure you're covering those first!

The dosage can be tricky. I've seen some people thrive on 2g, while others say they feel fine with 500mg. If you try it, just experiment and see what feels best!

I read some interesting stuff about TMG and its role in methylation, which could theoretically help with energy production. But I wouldn't ditch my staple supplements just yet. Maybe add it in and monitor how you feel?

28
u/mom_of_gains·

I wouldn't stress about the dose too much, but start low. I've read people doing 500mg before workouts. Just don't overdo it, and listen to your body. Also, what are you pairing it with?

u/macrocounter98·

In the end, if it feels good for you, go for it! Just make sure you're keeping track of how you respond. Some people react differently to supps. Your experience matters!

Oh dear, I've heard about TMG from my friends at the gym! They swear by it, but I think they're just trying to sell me on the latest trends. I prefer to stick with my tried-and-true creatine and whey. But if you're curious, why not give it a whirl? Just don't forget the most important thing: enjoy your workouts!

2
u/gainsandgrains·

Nutritionally speaking, it's always good to address homocysteine levels, but don't forget about your overall diet! A balanced approach with plenty of whole foods is crucial. What's your diet looking like right now?

u/whey_addict·

If you're looking for brands, i'd say stick to reputable ones. There are some solid companies out there. Check reviews and go from there!

4
u/mom_of_gains·

I tried TMG for a few weeks and honestly, I didn't notice much difference. I was more focused on my recovery and energy from whole foods. Have you thought about getting your levels checked instead? Sometimes those tweaks can be way more effective.

Facts, if u're feeling fatigued, it could be worth a try. But like, I wouldn't expect to suddenly bench 500 pounds just from TMG. That would be like expecting to gain muscle just by dreaming about it.

i tried it alongside my WODs, and I felt more energetic! If you're looking to push through those tough WODs, it might help. Just remember, it's not a magic pill!

16

You'd be surprised at how much a solid warm-up can affect your performance too! Don't forget that aspect while you're chasing supplements. Warm-ups are key!

5
u/macrocounter98·

There are some studies showing TMG might enhance performance, but most of them are not super strong. I'd be cautious with high doses too. Start with 500mg and see if you feel anything before going higher. You don't want to overload your system.

3

If I wanted to feel good, I'd just eat a donut, not pop more pills. 😂 Just do what makes you happy in the gym! Don't overthink it.

27

Omg, TMG sounds super cool! I love trying new things. But like, have you checked out some recipes to help recovery? I'm always experimenting in the kitchen! 💪✨

3
u/proteinpancakes22·

I love trying new supps, but I usually come back to my basics. It's like dating... sometimes you just need to find the right fit! 😂

5

As a grandma who lifts, I can say: don't put too much stock in the latest trends! Stick with your basics and listen to your body. I still love my creatine and the good ole protein shakes. That's what got me lifting into my 50s!

4
u/gymratbutchill·

Can't believe we're out here debating TMG, lmao. Just lift heavy and eat your chicken, bro! All this hype is wild.

17

Honestly, I tried it for a month and didn't see much difference. Maybe it's just not for everyone? Gotta stick to what works for you, fam. My PRs came from a consistent routine and my bro split!

5

Facts! TMG is kinda like that kid in school who thinks he's cool but just rides the coattails of the popular ones (creatine and protein, obviously). You might get some benefits, but it's no miracle supplement. If you're lowkey skeptical, you should keep your gains focused on the basics, like lifting heavy and eating right. Stick with what works, my dude.

3
u/bro_split_bro_420·

Ngl, I don't believe in most of these new supps. Just more marketing BS. If you're lifting heavy and eating right, you don't need TMG to boost your performance. It's like trying to add a turbo to a reliable car

2

This is just another supp trying to catch up to creatine, which is the real MVP. TMG sounds fancy, but I'm still hitting my PRs with good old mono. 🤷‍♂️

Don't forget the basics, kids! Prioritize whole foods, sleep, and consistent training. Those will always outshine the newest supplement fad. I've seen too many folks fall for the hype!

25
u/whey_addict·

100%. Keep it real and don't let marketing buzz get to you. Supplements are a tool, but they aren't magic. That's for sure!

22
u/broscience_bro·

Lmao, next thing you know, they'll be selling TMG-infused protein bars. Just eat ur food, fam. 💀

u/broscience_bro·

Skill issue if you think TMG will do all the work. Put in the grind, and the results will follow. But if you're curious, try it out and let us know!
