How to manage macros during IBD flares?

TL;DR: Looking for advice on managing macros during IBD flares while keeping meals appealing for kids.

I'm a busy mom and an RD with 8 years of clinical experience, and I'm finding it tough to balance macros during my flare-ups of IBD. I know the typical recommendation is to focus on low-fiber, easily digestible foods, but what about protein and carbs? My kids are always asking for meals that are more exciting than plain rice and boiled chicken.

If anyone here has experience or insights, I'd love to know how you all handle your nutrition during these times. Do you adjust your macro ratios or focus on caloric intake instead? Any specific meal ideas that can keep my energy up without triggering symptoms? I'm all ears for practical strategies that help both during flares and on the good days!

I can relate. When I'm dealing with my own stomach issues, I find smoothies can be a game changer. You can sneak in protein powder, Greek yogurt, and some frozen fruits. They're easy on the stomach and more appealing to the kids than plain rice and chicken.

I had an experience with low-fiber options too. When I was having trouble, I focused on eggs and soft-cooked vegetables. They're easy to digest, and you can whip up an omelet with some cheese. Not as exciting, but it works.

Honestly, I've been through some rough patches with my own gut. Sometimes, I just end up eating whatever I can without triggering symptoms. I find if I just stick to bland but calorie-dense foods, like mashed potatoes or nut butter, it helps.

Have you tried meal prepping for your good days? That way, you can make something exciting ahead of time that won't trigger flares. A chicken and sweet potato casserole could be a family hit, plus you'll have leftovers for bad days.

Adjusting your macro ratios might help, especially focusing on higher protein during flares. Low-fat dairy like cottage cheese can be a good source. Carbs from white rice and sweet potatoes can be effective too; they digest easier but still give you energy.

I think it depends on the severity of your flare. When mine were really bad, I stuck to just white rice and boiled chicken too. But I find I can handle oatmeal or bananas sometimes. Maybe try adding a bit of variety and see how your body reacts?

I agree with that last comment. During my own flare, I noticed high-carb meals made me feel sluggish. Switching to more moderate carb meals helped a lot. Try doing a mix of carbs and protein, and see what feels best for you.

What did the rice say to the chicken? 'You're the reason I'm getting boiled over here!' Seriously though, you might consider incorporating some low-fiber veggies that are still fun, like mashed sweet potatoes or zucchini fritters.
