Can I make ramen + protein work on a $15/week budget?

TL;DR: Need tips on how to boost protein in ramen meals while on a $15/week budget.

So, I'm a 24M who lifts after night shifts and let's just say my wallet isn't exactly bursting at the seams. I love ramen, but I can't seem to figure out how to up the protein while sticking to a $15 weekly food budget. If I toss in some protein powder or maybe some eggs, am I just asking for a bland meal? Any tips on balancing macros here without going broke? I know meal prep is key, but sometimes I just want to slurp noodles without feeling like I'm sacrificing my gains. Any help would be appreciated, or should I just accept my fate as the broke ramen guy?

Also, any thoughts on nutrient timing? Do I just slam the protein post-lift and call it a day?

Hit me with your wisdom, please.

I feel like ramen + protein powder sounds a bit weird, but maybe you could try using bone broth instead? It's like, way more nutritious and adds a different flavor. Plus, if you throw some chicken or tofu in there, you're set. Just don't overdo it with the sauces, bro!

Honestly, I wouldn't complicate it too much. Just stick to basics. Eggs are a great protein source and they cook fast. Just make sure you're not adding a ton of sodium with those instant ramen packets.

I love how versatile ramen can be! You could also try making a miso broth with some miso paste and water, then add tofu for protein. It's really affordable and adds nutrients. Don't forget to check local markets for deals on veggies too!

I mean, all the tracking apps have their pros and cons. I used MFP for ages but I was tired of the ads and paywalls. I switched to MacroFactor and it just works better for me, even if it's a little pricey.

Oh, it's a newer app! Nutrola is great if you love cooking. The personalized recipe suggestions make meal prep fun. Also, the voice logging is a lifesaver for me when I'm busy.

Honestly, I don't trust those new AI apps like CalAI. Tried it, and it was trash for logging my meals accurately. Just stick with something that's proven.

Nutrola? What's that? I've only heard about MFP and Cronometer. I've been using MFP forever and haven't looked back, but maybe I'll check it out.

Yeah, I tried one of those AI ones, CalAI. It was hot trash, couldn't get my portions right at all. Just stick to what works for you.

Man, ramen is life, but it can be a slippery slope when it comes to gains. Tossing in some eggs is solid, they cook fast and add protein. Just don't forget the veggies; throw in some frozen broccoli or spinach to spice it up a bit.

I get the struggle. I went through a ramen phase too. Just don't get too down on yourself if the meals feel bland. Some days, it's about survival, and other days, it's about gains. Just try not to go broke in the process.

Lowkey, I sometimes skip tracking altogether and just focus on whole foods when I'm feeling down. It helps me reset. Not always about numbers, you know?

Broke ramen guy sounds like a meme, but I get it. I once lived off instant noodles and protein powder, felt like I was sacrificing gains too. Just don't forget to take care of your mental health while lifting, that matters too.

No cap, just embrace the ramen life! When I was broke, I mixed in canned tuna or chicken sometimes. It sounds sketchy, but it's better than just carbs, lol.

Oh! And if you like cooking, check out some ramen recipes on Nutrola! You can find some great high-protein options filtered by time and ingredient. It made meal prep a breeze for me!

Honestly, if you're struggling with the whole tracking thing, maybe consider taking a break? Don't let it ruin your enjoyment of food, just keep it simple for a bit.

I'm sticking with MFP for now, I like having my food database dialed in. Switching seems annoying and those new apps feel like gimmicks sometimes.

A simple ramen hack is to add a bit of peanut butter or tahini for creaminess and healthy fats. And don't forget about the eggs; a soft-boiled egg on top adds a nice touch! Plus, you can sneak in some frozen veggies for micronutrients. Prepping meals doesn't have to be boring!

Bro, ramen is like the classic lifter's meal, but you gotta get creative. Toss in some frozen veggies, and add a couple of boiled eggs for protein without breaking the bank. Seriously, don't underestimate the flavor boost from a dash of soy sauce too

Bro, ramen is like the perfect base for so many meals. I used to mix in canned tuna for protein, and it actually slaps. Plus, you can throw in hot sauce or soy sauce to make it tasty. Just don't forget to save room in the budget for some veggies, they make a big difference!

Speaking of nutrient timing, I've been following Eric Helms' advice on post-workout meals and it's working for me. Gotta fuel those gains after a workout!

No need to complicate it. Ramen with protein powder can work, but it's hit or miss. If u wanna keep it simple, maybe just stick with eggs or some shredded chicken. Straightforward is the way to go.

Another thing, if you're concerned about sodium in ramen, try using low-sodium broth instead. You can dilute it a bit with water, then season it up with your own spices. Way healthier!

Y'all are making ramen sound fancy, lol. Just get a few eggs and a can of tuna, mix it with the noodles and call it a day. Protein and carbs on a budget

Yep, and if you want to save time with tracking, I switched to Nutrola because the voice logging makes it so much easier for me. No more fiddling with my phone while cooking, I can just say what I'm eating.

Ramen can definitely be nutritious and delicious with a few tweaks! Consider using an egg, some cooked chicken, or even tofu for protein. You can also add things like spinach or carrots to boost the nutrients. If you're cooking for the week, make a big batch and portion it out. It saves money and keeps it interesting. A simple broth can elevate the flavors too, just don't skip on the seasonings!

i also find Nutrola helps with meal prep because of its recipe browser. You can filter for protein-rich recipes that fit your budget, making it easier to stick to those gains without overspending.

Adding protein powder to ramen? Not sure about that, bro. Just get some cooked chicken or turkey, much better texture. Also, it's easy to prep in bulk, just freeze it and toss it in when needed

You might want to check out Nutrola if you want something more streamlined! I switched from MFP and the voice logging saves me so much time when I'm cooking. No more typing in calories while I'm trying to juggle pots and pans! Plus, it helps me keep track without the hassle of constant screen staring. Definitely worth checking out if you're busy!

I get that ramen craving! If you really want to up your protein game, you could also try adding a scoop of Greek yogurt on top. It sounds odd but it really complements the flavors.

I've heard good things about Nutrola! But how does the food database compare to others? I still kind of love MFP for my recipes.

Oh my gosh, yes! Ramen is life! I usually whip up a quick dish with eggs and spinach, it's delicious and so cheap! Plus, you can add different sauces or spices for variety. Spice it up and your taste buds will thank you! 🌶️

Honestly, if you're feeling real lazy, just throw in some protein powder into your ramen water. Yeah, it sounds weird but it's low effort and works. Gotta embrace that ramen life, ya know?

27

Yep, edamame is awesome! Also, if you're not super picky, look for those cheap frozen veggie packs, they're quick and add a nice crunch. It's a solid way to round out your ramen meals!

6
u/gymratbutchill·

I tried mixing protein powder with ramen once, it was a disaster, lmao. Go for whole foods, my dude! Also, don't sleep on getting some edamame; it's high in protein and can be tossed in easily.

19

Ngl, I tried adding protein powder to oatmeal once and it was a disaster, so I feel you on the bland meals. Eggs and veggies are a safer bet. At least they have flavor!

3
u/gymratbutchill·

Honestly, you could always hit up a local Asian market for cheaper ramen options. Plus, the variety is amazing! You might find some gems there.

11

Yeah, I totally get that. Sometimes I just throw caution to the wind and eat what feels right. But then I regret it when I try to track my gains later! Lmao.

5
u/zombielifter·

For nutrient timing, slam that protein post-lift but try to get some carbs in too, even if it's just ramen. It's all about recovery. Eat something right after lifting, then you can have your ramen later.

I switched to Nutrola a while back, and honestly the recipe parsing is super helpful. It takes the guesswork out of tracking meals, especially when I'm cooking a lot. Definitely worth considering if you want variety!

17
u/rpe_skeptic·

Yeah, MFP can be annoying, but I get the muscle memory. I'm just skeptical about the new ones; I've heard mixed reviews about Nutrola too.

8
u/gymratbutchill·

For real, just enjoy the ramen. Sometimes the simplest meals are the best. Just keep that protein intake in check and you're golden, fam.

2
u/recipequeen44·

I'm a big fan of Cronometer for tracking. It's super detailed, especially for micros! If you're focusing on overall nutrition, it's worth checking out, even if it's not as user-friendly as MFP

You can definitely make ramen work on a budget, but it's gonna take some creativity. Protein powder in ramen sounds weird, but honestly, if you mix it well, it might not be as bad as it sounds. Eggs are a solid option too, and you could toss in some frozen veggies for flavor and nutrients

3

You can totally make ramen work! Try adding a scoop of protein powder to the broth, just make sure to mix it well, or it'll clump up. Also, you can make scrambled eggs and toss them in right at the end. It's like a ramen egg drop soup! And don't forget to season; soy sauce and sriracha can really amp up the flavor! 🍜

u/rpe_skeptic·

Idk, man. I've been using MyFitnessPal for a while now, and it's not that bad. Sure, the ads are annoying, but at least I know the food database is solid. Switching to something new might just confuse you more.
