Does screen time before bed actually ruin sleep quality?

TL;DR: Evidence suggests screen time before bed can disrupt sleep quality due to melatonin interference.

There's been a lot of chatter about how screen time, especially from phones or TVs, ruins sleep quality. A meta-analysis from 2019 (Hale & Guan, 2015) found that excessive blue light exposure can negatively affect sleep onset and quality by disrupting melatonin production. Another study (Hale, 2021) demonstrated that individuals who engaged in screen time before bed reported poorer sleep quality, with an effect size of d = 0.44. This suggests a moderate impact on sleep disruption.

While it's not a universal truth for everyone, the evidence supports that limiting screen time before bed could enhance sleep for many. Try reading a book or doing a light activity instead! What's your experience with this?

There are studies showing that blue light affects melatonin, but everyone's different. I've had nights where I'm glued to my phone and still sleep fine. Personal variability is huge.

Omg, I totally get it! I used to scroll Instagram in bed, and it just made me more awake! Now, I try to read a chapter of my favorite book instead. It's so much better for sleep!

I can't even tell you how many times I've lost sleep due to late-night Netflix binges! Now I plan my WODs and wind down with some light stretching instead. It makes a world of difference.

This is pretty consistent with what I've seen in my own sleep tracking. After a few weeks of cutting back on screen time before bed, my sleep onset definitely improved. The science backs it up.

Facts. I've tried scrolling before bed, and I always wake up feeling like trash. It's like I took a nap on a roller coaster.

I used to binge-watch shows right before bed, and I'd wake up feeling groggy! Switching to reading or meditating has been life-changing for my sleep quality. Plus, it makes me feel more relaxed. I think it's definitely worth trying if you're struggling!

While I get the science, I've gone to bed right after gaming and slept just fine. Not everyone is the same, and some can handle it better. Just saying.

I never thought screen time affected sleep until I started tracking my sleep patterns. Cut down on screens and saw my REM improve. Wild how much we underestimate this stuff.

Lol, I thought I could just watch one episode and still hit the gym in the morning. Turns out I was dead tired and didn't lift jack. Now I just chill with the fam instead.

Bro, if you're gaming right before bed, you're just asking for a bad sleep! It's all about getting that rest. Your gains will suffer too, trust me.
