VO2max and Longevity: Should Lifters Care?

TL;DR: Higher VO2max is linked to lower mortality risk; should lifters prioritize cardio?

So I read a study by Phillips et al. (2021) that connects VO2max to longevity. They found that higher VO2max is linked to a lower risk of mortality, even for folks who lift weights occasionally. This got me thinking, should we be doing more cardio or just sticking with our weights? I mean, I lift when I can between dad duties, but I don't want to miss out on the long game. Any practical tips to improve this without sacrificing my limited gym time?

I used to skip cardio, but now I throw in a short run or HIIT session once a week. Can't hurt to add some heart health while juggling the kids, right?

I mean, I tried running once and tripped over my own feet, so cardio isn't for everyone. But I get it! Maybe a quick HIIT session could be an option.

I feel you on the time crunch! My clients often ask about this too. A brisk walk with the kids after dinner can work wonders, and it's family time too. Finding little ways to add movement counts.

This whole VO2max thing is interesting but, is it really the best marker of health? There's so much emphasis on cardio when weightlifting can also have significant benefits. Why not focus on building muscle and strength? Plus, research keeps changing. Next year they'll probably say something else.

Facts! Adding even 15 minutes of cardio can improve VO2max and endurance. Try something fun like cycling or swimming to keep it interesting. Cardio doesn't have to be a chore!

Lifting is great, but cardio can really help with recovery and overall stamina. I've noticed a big difference in my endurance when I throw in even a little bit of running each week

LOL, yeah, cardio is a necessary evil. But maybe set a timer for 10 mins after your lifts? Just enough to get the heart pumping without ruining your gains.

You can easily integrate cardio into your routine! Try supersetting your lifts with some bodyweight exercises like burpees or jump squats. It'll elevate your heart rate and keep you lean. Plus, it's time-efficient!

I get it! Between lifting and life, time is tight. You could even try something like circuit training where you lift and do cardio in one go. Super efficient and keeps your heart happy

Cardio? Nah, just lift heavier and call it a day! Just kidding. Maybe try mixing in some quick cardio after your lifts? It'll give you a little boost without stealing your entire workout.

I don't buy into the hype around cardio for longevity. Strength training has proven benefits too. It's not all about VO2max. Quality over quantity, right? Focus on what works for you!

Definitely a balance! I do a mix of lifting and sprinting. Short, intense cardio gets my heart rate up without dragging my workouts. Plus, I can still enjoy my protein shakes.

Okay, but can we talk about how my legs are jelly after squats? Cardio just sounds like more suffering. But yeah, I guess it helps with longevity and all that.

You speak truth about longevity and strength training! Consider it all as a journey. Embrace the process, from lifting heavy to enjoying some cardio. Each step taken is a step towards greater health and balance.

There's beauty in balance. Lifting is like sculpting a masterpiece, but cardio adds vitality to the canvas. Imagine a world where strength and endurance coexist harmoniously! You might even enjoy it.
