Fasting and lifting, how do I even fuel up?

I've been trying out intermittent fasting while still hitting the weights, but I'm struggling with how to fuel properly for those lifting sessions. Do I chug a protein shake before lifting or wait till after? I'm a bit lost on nutrient timing when I'm in a fasting window. Any tips or experiences to share? This whole fasting and lifting combo feels like a balancing act!

With my busy schedule, I've been trying to keep it simple. I usually lift in the mornings and then have a big breakfast afterward. Kids get me up early anyway! A good combo of eggs and toast or maybe some oatmeal is great for recovery. If you're lifting heavy, carbs can really help with that energy!

Protein timing is definitely a thing, but it shouldn't stress you out too much. Just keep getting those quality proteins in after your fast. I like to whip up a quick smoothie with some spinach, protein powder, and almond milk after lifting. Tastes great and helps with recovery!

Exactly! And if you're lifting fasted, make sure to manage those weights carefully. Going in with too much intensity might leave you drained. Know your limits, and adjust as needed. Focus on form, and the results will follow.

I think it also depends on the workout intensity. If you're going for heavy lifts, you might need a little more fuel than just waiting for after. I usually have a smoothie with spinach, almond milk, and protein powder post-lift; it's refreshing and packed with nutrients.

Honestly, nutrient timing can be tricky with fasting. I'd recommend focusing on your overall protein intake rather than stressing about pre- or post-workout timing. Some studies show that as long as you get enough protein throughout the day, your gains shouldn't be impacted much. Just make sure to include protein sources in your eating window.

As a dad who's been juggling fasting and lifting, I totally get it. My best advice is to break your fast with a solid meal that has protein, carbs, and healthy fats. I usually lift in the afternoon, so I try to get in a good breakfast before hitting the gym. Just remember, lifting is about consistency, and finding a routine that works for you is crucial.

Ngl, as a vegan, I have to get creative with protein. I usually break my fast with tofu scramble or a big chickpea salad. If you're not vegan, there's always the option of using plant-based protein powders too. The key is to make sure you're getting enough nutrients.

I lift vegan and honestly, there are plenty of great protein sources that fit into a fast! I love using pea protein in shakes after my workout, but don't sleep on lentils and chickpeas as good options for your meals. Just make sure you're getting a good mix of amino acids!

For real, don't sweat it too much! The most important thing is your total daily intake. If u hit your protein goal by the end of the day, u're golden. Just keep it fun and light-hearted! 🏋️‍♂️

I've noticed that adjusting my fasting window can also change my lifting performance. If I lift earlier in the day, I try to shift my eating window. Just pay attention to how you feel during workouts, and adjust accordingly. Personalize it.

One thing I've found helpful is tracking my intake with an app. I use Cronometer, and it helps me keep tabs on protein and macros during my feeding window. If you can see what you need, it's easier to plan meals around your workouts. Just don't overthink it; keep it simple.

If you're lifting during your fasting window, you might want to experiment with having a protein shake after your workout rather than before. Research suggests that post-workout protein can help with muscle recovery and growth. Just make sure you're getting enough overall protein throughout your eating window to hit your goals.

I feel you on the balancing act! I've tried intermittent fasting and lifting, and what worked for me was scheduling my workouts just before my eating window. This way, I could get a good pre- and post-workout meal. Plus, it felt like a family affair, getting my kids involved in meal prep afterward. Who knew they'd be great sous chefs?

4
u/flexing_father·

As a dad who's trying to balance fitness with family time, I get your struggle! I usually aim to lift in the late afternoon when I can break my fast afterward. Pre-workout, I'll sometimes sip on BCAAs for a little boost without breaking the fast. Just remember, listening to your body is super important! If you're feeling sluggish, it might be time to tweak your approach.

Just drink some water, bro. Maybe a little coffee if you need that caffeine kick. Protein shakes are like, the icing on the cake post-lift! Don't stress too much about nutrient timing, just make sure you hit those macros eventually.

I feel like im always in a balancing act with my workouts and meal times! It helps to keep a flexible schedule. Maybe try lifting on a day when you can break your fast afterward to see how it feels. You might find it works better than you think.

^^^ This is the vibe. I had a phase where I tried to squeeze in a protein shake before every lift. It didn't really work for me. Now I just focus on getting enough nutrients during my eating window, and it's made a world of difference.

Isn't it fascinating how our bodies adapt? I find that as long as I keep my protein intake high throughout the week, I don't have to worry about precise timing. Just make sure your meals are nutrient-dense, and you should be golden. There's no one-size-fits-all solution!

8

Okay, but like, why are we even talking about nutrient timing? Just eat enough food during your window, and don't stress about a shake. Lifting is more about effort than anything else. Plus, who doesn't love a good post-workout feast?

8
u/broketheplateau·

Tracking macros is key, but it can feel overwhelming. I actually just log my meals in Cronometer, and it helps me visualize my intake. I agree that protein intake post-lift is essential, but what works for you might take some time to figure out. Everyone's different

One time, i tried lifting on an empty stomach, and it didn't end well. I was weak and just couldn't focus. Now, I ensure I have at least a snack of fruit or a protein bar before I work out. Just remember to prioritize your health over everything else!

6
u/flexing_father·

As a dad, I totally understand wanting to balance everything. You can try prepping meals with your kids; they love helping out in the kitchen! It's a fun way to make sure everyone is eating well, and you can control the nutrient timing together.

Just don't skip leg day, okay? 😂 Keeping it balanced is the way to go, even while fasting. Strength training is important, but I always find cardio is a good complement to it. Keeping that heart rate up can make a difference!

78

Facts! Lifting on an empty stomach is a bit risky. You could try a light snack like a banana or some Greek yogurt before hitting the weights. It gives you that little boost without wrecking your fast. Plus, who doesn't love a good snack?

19

Facts! The timing thing can be overhyped sometimes. Just focus on getting enough protein in after your workout. If you're feeling good lifting fasted, then keep doing it! Just make sure you get that post-lift meal in.

Sometimes, fasting means you need to be strategic about your meals. Have you considered meal prepping? My wife and I do it on Sundays. It's a lifesaver when it comes to hitting macros and balancing our workouts! Plus, it keeps me accountable. Gotta lead by example for the kids.

1

Yeah, don't forget the legs! Leg day is like, the underrated superhero of fitness. Plus, those squats help with core stability, so you win all around. Get that PR!

1
u/flexing_father·

Totally agree! Also, make sure to have some healthy snacks ready for your kids after their playtime. They're little energy balls, and keeping them active is key! Family workouts can also be a fun way to stay fit together.

I feel you on the struggle! When I first tried intermittent fasting while lifting, I was a mess. I had to figure out what worked best for me. It's about finding that sweet spot between lifting and fueling your body right. Just keep experimenting.

3
u/marathon_maverick·

Yeah, if you're struggling with energy, consider the meal timing! For longer workouts, I like to have a small snack an hour before if I'm fasting. A banana or something easy to digest can be perfect to give you that extra boost. Just be cautious not to overdo it; it can mess with your fasting.

2

Honestly, I can't function without my pre-workout coffee! I lift better with that caffeine buzz. It might help to have something light before hitting the weights, like a banana or something. Just my two cents

4
u/vegan_cooklift·

Ngl, intermittent fasting can be a game of trial and error. I've found that plant-based protein sources like lentils and chickpeas work great post-workout! If you're in the fasting zone, it might be worth waiting until after to enjoy those foods. Plus, it gives you something to look forward to after your lift!

3
u/marathon_maverick·

I've been doing intermittent fasting for a while now while preparing for marathons. It's all about finding your rhythm. I typically wait until after my lifting session to eat, and I focus on a high-protein meal with carbs for recovery. You might be surprised how well you can perform when your body adapts to it.

2
u/broketheplateau·

Timing is crucial when fasting and lifting. If you're in a fasting window, you might want to consider having your workout towards the end of it, so you can eat soon after. Research suggests that post-workout nutrition is key for recovery, especially protein intake. Aim for a solid meal with protein and carbs after lifting to maximize gains.

2
u/midwest_keto_dad·

If you're chugging protein shakes before lifting, make sure you're not feeling bloated. It might be better to focus on solid food when your eating window opens. I usually have some eggs and a slice of whole-grain toast to kick things off, and it sets me up for a killer workout. But honestly, if you're really hungry before lifting, listen to your body!

27

So many people think you need to chug a shake before lifting, but it's kinda overrated. Just eat enough during your feeding window, and you'll be fine! Also, what's the point of drinking a shake if you can't enjoy some actual food later? Like, bro, meal prep is the way to go.

7
u/flexing_father·

You know what helps too? Making sure your kids are active with you! It sets a great example for them while you work out. I have a small home gym, and they love joining in. Family fitness is the best kind of fitness.

7
u/midwest_keto_dad·

I used to think I needed to eat right before lifting, but I've found it's better to listen to my body. If you're doing a full-body workout, maybe try to time your meals so you have energy without feeling stuffed. Just don't forget to hydrate; that's critical, too

3
u/marathon_maverick·

You might find it beneficial to track your intake with an app. i've been using MacroFactor for a while, and it helps me stay on point without too much hassle. It's flexible and allows for some adjustments. If you're serious about your gains while fasting, tracking macros can provide some clarity.

0

Bro, if you can squat while fasting, you're a legend! Just keep pushing through and remember to enjoy the journey. This lifting thing is supposed to be fun, not a chore!

11
u/bodyweight_bro·

What if i told you that you could lift weights on an empty stomach and still crush it? Just listen to your body. If you feel weak, maybe tweak your eating times. Also, remember, bodyweight exercises are always an option if you're feeling off. You can train anywhere!

3
u/broketheplateau·

One thing I've learned over the years is that body composition changes happen over time. Fasting might not be for everyone, and that's okay! Just find what works for you and stick to it. Consistency is where the magic happens.

0

Lmao, sometimes you just gotta wing it! If you're feeling off, just adjust your meals until you find that right balance. And hey, nothing wrong with chugging that protein shake post-lift and calling it a day. Gains are gains!

0

LOL, you can just lift and then crush a protein shake like it's your job! I mean, what else do we live for? If you aren't sweating while chugging it down, are you even lifting? 😂 Just make sure it fits your macros, that's the real challenge
