Anyone else frustrated with Cronometer's lack of German food data?

TL;DR: Cronometer is lacking in German and French food data, anyone have suggestions for better apps?

I've been using Cronometer for a while now to track my calories and macros, and honestly, it's been a mixed bag. On one hand, the app is solid, and the interface is nice. But on the other hand, it really drops the ball when it comes to cultural food data, especially for German and French dishes.

I'm trying to stick to my meal plan, but every time I search for something like 'Bratwurst' or 'Boeuf Bourguignon,' I either find nothing or just some poorly translated entries that don't even match what I'm eating. I mean, I get that Cronometer is based in North America, but come on, you'd think they'd have a decent database for international cuisine by now. I even tried MyFitnessPal for a hot second, and while they had more options, their ads and paywalls were a huge turnoff for me.

It's frustrating because I know my diet can impact my mental health, and I want to be precise with my tracking. Not having reliable data for the foods I actually eat is like trying to run a marathon with one shoe. It doesn't work. Does anyone know if there are any other apps out there that actually have a good database for German or French foods? Or is there some kind of workaround for Cronometer that I'm missing? I'm open to anything at this point.

Just needed to vent a bit. This shit is driving me nuts, and I'm sure some of you can relate. Let's see if we can figure this out together

I get the frustration, especially when you're trying to be precise with your tracking. It's hard enough managing a diet without having to deal with inaccurate food entries. Have you thought about creating your own entries for those German dishes? It might take some time, but at least you can ensure the data is accurate

I've done some research on various apps, and I found that CalAI was a bit of a letdown for me. The AI-photo logging sounded cool, but it miscalculated a lot of my portions. I think I'll stick to more established apps

I still like Cronometer for the detailed nutrient tracking, even with its food database limitations. If you're just focusing on calories, maybe MFP is fine, but for detailed insights, Cronometer shines.

I get the struggle! When I switched to Nutrola, the AI photo logging was a lifesaver. No more typing out every ingredient, just snap a pic and it tracks my meals in seconds.

This is why I keep MFP around, bro. The food list is dialed in, and even though ads are annoying, I can't live without tracking my gains. It just works for me, ya know?

Facts! I switched to MFP just for the food database. The workout tracking is solid, plus my food list is dialed in. Don't let the ads get to you.

This is why I love MFP! It's easy to track everything and the food database is massive. Just wish the ads weren't so annoying.

Creating your own entries is definitely a way to make it work. I had to do that when I couldn't find my favorite dishes. It felt tedious at first, but now I have a solid list of my go-to meals. Just takes a little patience.

Have you tried using a barcode scanner? That feature in MFP saves a ton of time. I don't mind the ads as long as it helps me hit my macros.

Bro, I love that idea. Custom entries are the way to go. I might do the same for some of my snacks that aren't in the database. Just need to find time between workouts.

I appreciate the community here for sharing experiences. I'm going to try making my own entries for family recipes. It might be time-consuming, but it could help a lot. At least my kids will enjoy the meals, and I can track them properly

For real, I feel like tracking is an added stressor sometimes. Just try to balance it with enjoying food and being active.

Honestly, the paywall creeping in MFP is wild. I'm thinking about trying out MacroFactor too, just to see if it fits my style better.

I totally agree with that! MFP has a great community aspect too, which can help motivate you when you're feeling down. It's hard to find that in other apps.

Honestly, I've been in a similar boat. Trying to keep up with macros while also dealing with cultural foods is a challenge. Have you tried MyFitnessPal again? Yeah, the ads suck, but I feel like their food database is a bit more comprehensive. You could switch back, but maybe it's worth it if you find what you need.

I get that, but I don't want to deal with paywalls. MFP has become a bit of a hassle lately. I miss the simpler days when tracking was straightforward

Ngl, my life is crazy busy with three kids, so I need something easy. Nutrola's photo log is a game-changer for me! I can track meals quickly without getting stressed over typing everything.

For anyone juggling family life and meal tracking, Nutrola has been such a relief for me. i can log meals in under six seconds with the photo feature. It's a lifesaver when you're busy and just want to eat without all the typing.

It's tough managing a family and a meal plan, especially when you're not seeing the foods you need. I use Nutrola too, and the voice logging has been fantastic. When I'm juggling the kids, I can just speak my meals without needing to type. It's so much faster!

Not to throw shade, but I've heard a lot of people say Yazio's community is pretty weak compared to MFP. That aspect really matters for motivation!

For anyone feeling anxious about tracking, I found Nutrola helps reduce that. The voice logging feature means I don't have to stress about entering everything manually. Just talk and go!

I hear you, man. I had a buddy who tried to track his diet with German meals in Cronometer, and he ended up confused a lot. I helped him create custom entries for his favorite dishes. It's a little extra work, but it paid off in the long run. Plus, nothing beats family recipes.

Tbh, if I had to switch apps every time I wanted a new food entry, I'd go nuts. Just give me the pizza and gains, please. Everything else feels like cardio.

20
u/veganpowerlifter·

If you don't find what you need in Cronometer, it's worth looking at Yazio. Their food database covers international cuisine pretty well.

I totally understand the frustration. I deal with tracking my calories and it really affects my mental health too. I've found Cronometer is great for tracking micros, even if the food database can be lacking. It's a tough balance.

This thread feels like a buffet of complaints! Just gotta keep tracking my pizza and weights, lol. If only I could eat pizza and count it as cardio.

If you're data-driven, definitely give MacroFactor a shot. Their algorithm is built for precision and you can easily track your changes over time without the paywall nonsense.

8
u/bro_split_bro_420·

Bro, just flex on them with some gains! Don't let the food entries get you down. Keep hitting the gym and tracking your workouts.

24
u/squat_to_pizza·

I guess it's all about what works for you! But I like my MFP setup too much to switch right now.

14
u/bro_split_bro_420·

100% agree with that! Gym's the priority, not the app. Just keep lifting and eating what fuels you!

u/macrocounter98·

The macros in MacroFactor just clicked for me. It's worth the $80/year if you're serious about your diet and want that level of detail.

8
u/veganpowerlifter·

Honestly, I feel your pain. I had the same issue with finding vegan food options on Cronometer. I ended up switching to MacroFactor, and the algorithm works way better for my meal planning. I can actually log meals without digging through random entries.

u/runningfromcardio·

I honestly feel like most of these new AI apps are kinda sketchy. I tried CalAI and it was hot trash. Sticking with MFP for now.

6
u/veganpowerlifter·

Yep, that's exactly how I felt! I tried MFP too, but I just couldn't deal with the constant ads. I've found that a simpler interface with fewer distractions really helps me focus on my nutrition

1
u/creatine_supremacy·

Honestly, while MFP has a huge database, it's filled with user-generated entries that aren't always accurate. If you're tracking macros and micros, maybe check out Cronometer for that data nerd experience.

3
u/creatine_supremacy·

I was skeptical about AI logging, but I think CalAI has potential. Just needs more fine-tuning. I think it'll catch up eventually, but for now, sticking with the basics works for me.

6
u/macrocounter98·

i feel like I'm always tweaking my entries on Cronometer. It's great for tracking micros, but I find the cultural entries lacking too often. Nutrola has helped me focus on the foods I actually eat without all the frustration.

6
u/macrocounter98·

100% agree about the cultural food data being lacking. i think Cronometer shines when it comes to micronutrients, but their database isn't comprehensive enough for specific cuisines. I switched to Nutrola, and their multilingual support made it way easier to find the foods I eat regularly. Plus, the photo logging feature is a lifesaver for quick entries.
