Does magnesium actually improve sleep? What does the research say about the effect size?

TL;DR: Magnesium can improve sleep quality, but the effect size is moderate and varies by individual.

I see magnesium supplements recommended everywhere for better sleep, but I'm curious about the actual evidence behind it. A meta-analysis from 2017 reviewed multiple studies and found that magnesium supplementation had a moderate effect size (d=0.5) on sleep quality, especially in those who were deficient. In practical terms, this means it can help, but it isn't a miracle fix.

The studies usually involved small sample sizes and varied dosages, so the response can differ from person to person. If you're already getting enough magnesium from your diet, popping a supplement may not do much for your sleep. It's worth considering your overall lifestyle too, stress management and good sleep hygiene can often be just as important, if not more so. Has anyone had real success with magnesium for sleep? I'd love to hear about it.

I get the appeal, but I'd be cautious about relying too much on supplements. I'm all about getting nutrients from whole foods. If your diet is balanced, you might be fine without extra magnesium. Plus, addressing lifestyle factors like stress and sleep hygiene is crucial

The research shows mixed results, but the meta-analysis you mentioned is solid. A d=0.5 effect size indicates some benefits, especially for those deficient. I'd also be curious about how the magnesium form used in studies affects outcomes. Different compounds can have different bioavailability.

Yes to everything you said! Magnesium can be helpful, but it's not a miracle cure. I always encourage focusing on nutrition first. Try incorporating magnesium-rich foods like spinach, nuts, and seeds. If you still struggle, then maybe look into supplements. Balancing everything is key for a successful cut or bulk.

I've tried magnesium before, and honestly, it did help me chill out before bed! I think it's great for winding down after a long day. But no cap, if you're not deficient, it might not do much. I still focus on my veggies and whole grains to keep my levels up.

Omg, have you tried magnesium pancakes? I blend some magnesium powder into my pancake mix sometimes! Tastes bomb and helps with sleep. I swear, it's like a breakfast dream come true. Just be careful not to overdo it, too much magnesium can mess with your gut.

Honestly, I take magnesium and sometimes feel like it works, but then I remember that I might just be really tired from lifting. Life's tough, man. It's like, 'am I sleeping better or just too exhausted to notice?' This whole sleep thing is such a struggle. Who knew counting sheep could feel like a workout?
