Running and Lifting in the Same Day: Which Order Works Best?

TL;DR: Wondering whether to run or lift first when training on the same day, and how others manage recovery.

I've been juggling both lifting and running on the same days for a while now, and I'm curious about what others do. Some days, I lift first and then run, while on others, I reverse that order. I know recovery is crucial, especially when training for a half-marathon.

One thing that's really helped me is paying attention to how I feel post-workout. If I lift first, I find I might not have enough energy for a solid run, especially if I'm focusing on a longer distance. On the flip side, running first can leave me too fatigued to hit my lifting goals. I've started experimenting with light mobility work after my runs to aid recovery, and it seems to help. So, what's your approach? How do you balance both activities and still prioritize recovery?

I love combining my workouts, especially when I can turn it into a social event! After my run, I usually whip up a delicious yogurt bowl packed with protein and toppings. It's a perfect post-workout treat. If you're looking for recovery ideas, let me know and I can share my favorite recipes!

As a busy mom, I totally relate to the juggling act! I usually lift in the morning and run in the evening when I can fit it in. I make sure to prep meals and snacks throughout the week so I have the right fuel on hand. It helps keep my energy up for both lifting and running, plus my kids love helping me out in the kitchen!

100% agree! Just finding that balance is key. I used to just focus on lifting but felt sluggish during runs. Now, mixing both gives me more energy and keeps my workouts fresh. What's the worst that can happen? You adapt and grow!

Running before lifting is like eating your veggies before dessert. It's not the most fun, but it sets you up for success later! My go-to combo is a light run followed by some HIIT lifting. Plus, with my keto diet, I feel the fat burn from the runs is a solid boost for my lifts. I swear by this method!

Bro, just lift heavy and run fast. Who cares what order? 😂

Honestly, I mix it up weekly. Some days I run long, then lift lighter; other days I lift heavier and add a quick run. Keeps things interesting, and you avoid burnout. Plus, switching it up helps build both strength and stamina over time. I might hit a hike on the weekend to clear my mind and enjoy nature too!

I totally understand your struggle with balancing lifting and running. It can be tough to figure out which order works best for you, especially when both activities demand so much energy. I've found that when I lift first, I'm often too fatigued for an effective run, but if I run first, my lifting suffers. One thing I've started doing is paying close attention to my nutrition pre-workout. A good snack can make a huge difference in my energy levels and recovery!

Running can feel like a punishment sometimes, but I make it fun with music or podcasts. Sometimes, I just want to lift heavy and be done. But, you do you, just don't get too comfortable or you might lose gains. Balance is key, right?

Facts! Just chug coffee before either, and you'll be good.

Running first can actually be beneficial for endurance lifters, since it improves your cardiovascular base. I've seen clients with stronger lifts who also prioritize their cardio. For those who say it ruins strength gains, I'd argue that it's all about periodization and personal goals.

You know, I used to lift first all the time, but I started running first and it was like I unlocked a new level. Sure, I might be wrecked for the lifts, but running clears my head, and I end up hitting PRs later in the week. Just goes to show that everyone's different, I guess.

Ngl, it's all about finding what fits your schedule. I'm a college student, so I usually go for runs in the morning before class and lift in the evenings. Helps me de-stress, and I'm always on a budget, so it keeps me from eating junk food too!

Lowkey, lifting after running sounds like a skill issue. But whatever works for you, I guess.

This is such a vibe! Also, don't forget hydration. I like to sip on electrolyte drinks post-run to recover fast and keep my energy levels stable for lifting. Plus, it's a good excuse to add a little flavor to my water!

There's a lot of research on this, and many people suggest lifting after cardio for optimal strength gains. When you run first, your body burns through glycogen stores, which can impact your lifting performance. I keep my heart rate low during the runs and focus on longer sessions to make sure I still have enough energy left for heavy lifts afterward.

I think it's great that you're experimenting with mobility work! Stretching and foam rolling can really aid in recovery. After my workouts, I dedicate some time to mobility routines, and I've noticed a huge difference in how my body feels the next day. It's all about listening to what your body needs.
