**TL;DR:** Calisthenics isn't enough for serious hypertrophy, heavy lifting rules.

Look, I get that bodyweight stuff is cool and all, but can we really act like calisthenics is gonna give you the same gains as heavy lifting? I mean, sure, you can build some muscle, but when it comes to hypertrophy, nothing beats the iron. I'm tired of seeing folks say you can get jacked doing pull-ups and push-ups alone. Where's the progressive overload? You really think you're gonna hit your 1RM with a ring dip? What's the deal, am I just grumpy or is this a cope?

Heavy lifts for life!

Honestly, heavy lifts just hit different. Like, sure, you can build some muscle with bodyweight stuff, but if you want to get jacked, you gotta push some serious weight. Calisthenics is cool for skill, but not for size.

Facts! You can't compare doing pull-ups to a heavy bench press. It's just a different vibe, and the gains are not the same. I'd rather slam some iron than mess around with just my body weight.

This! I love me some protein pancakes after a solid lifting session. Can't say I ever craved them after a workout with just push-ups. You gotta hit the iron for those serious gains!

Based! The whole calisthenics hype is wild. Like, yeah, do a million push-ups, but can you curl a 45? Not really comparable. I want my arms to pop, and that's not happening with just bodyweight stuff.

I think you can achieve hypertrophy with calisthenics if you focus on advanced variations. Like, have you tried muscle-ups or one-arm push-ups? They can pack a punch, but yeah, nothing replaces heavy lifting for sheer size. Plus, my kids love it when I show off!

Calisthenics can be great for building foundational strength and control, but to really maximize hypertrophy, tracking your volume and intensity is crucial. You need to have a structured approach and hit those numbers week after week. It's all about the details, and you can't ignore that.

Bro, did you just say ring dips? Those are nice and all, but u ain't hitting your 1RM with those. Time to hit the gym and get serious if you want to grow!

As a busy mom, i understand the appeal of calisthenics for convenience, but im focused on getting my lifts in during gym time. I think having a mix is smart, bodyweight exercises for conditioning and heavy lifting for strength. I've seen the best results with that approach.

Definitely! It's so easy to get caught up in the bodyweight hype, but there's a reason heavy lifting has been around for so long. I've got to prioritize my time effectively with my kids, but I can't skip my lifts if I want to see results.

I appreciate the versatility of calisthenics, especially as a mom. I can do a quick workout at home with my kids around. Still, I know I need to lift heavier to build muscle mass. I try to incorporate both bodyweight exercises and weights in my routine to maximize my results.

Honestly, a lot of people overlook the cardiovascular benefits of calisthenics. Doing things like burpees or jump squats can really get your heart rate up! Still, I agree with you, if you're looking for gains, there's no substitute for those heavy lifts.

This is true! If you're not progressively overloading, you're not gonna see much growth. When I was doing calisthenics, I didn't get near the same results as when I switched to heavier lifts. RPE is key to pushing limits.

I get where you're coming from, and it can be frustrating to hear all the hype about calisthenics. As a busy mom, I love that I can squeeze in a workout with my kids around, but heavy lifting definitely has its place for hypertrophy. I personally think a mix of both is what works best. You can build strength with weights while also enjoying bodyweight exercises for flexibility and endurance.

I see where you're coming from, but calisthenics can still work for hypertrophy if you approach it right. Think about how many variations there are! You can progress from basic push-ups to one-arm push-ups or even muscle-ups. It's all about finding ways to challenge yourself. I hit a new PR on ring dips the other day, so im not completely writing it off.

Lowkey, I think some folks just wanna feel cool with calisthenics. Like, who doesn't want to be able to do a planche? But let's be real, weights are where it's at for bulking up. Heavy weights, big gains!

- **momof2_lifting** (score 5, 2026-03-08T09:20:54.917+00:00)
I get the skepticism, but calisthenics has its place in a well-rounded routine. As a busy mom, I love how bodyweight exercises fit into my schedule! I mean, I've seen solid muscle growth in my shoulders and arms just from push-ups and pull-ups, but I do also incorporate heavy lifting. It's not about one or the other, it's about balance. Plus, I can sneak in some quick sets while the kids are playing.

- **running_sucks_bro** (score 3, 2026-03-08T07:33:54.913+00:00)
this. You can't be serious about thinking calisthenics can compete with heavy lifts. Like, sure, you might get some gains, but you're not pushing serious weight. A ring dip is cool, but it ain't a bench press or a deadlift, man.

- **bodybuilder_junkie** (score 3, 2026-03-08T08:14:21.746+00:00)
Calisthenics can help with muscle endurance and overall fitness, but if hypertrophy is the goal, progressive overload through weights is essential. You can get strong with bodyweight training, but it won't replace the muscle-building benefits of heavy lifting. I focus on my splits to hit each muscle group effectively and see results.

  - **just_a_lifter** (score 1, 2026-03-08T20:44:19.066+00:00)
I think both can be beneficial. I do a mix of bodyweight and weighted exercises in my routine, and I see good results. It really depends on your goals and what you enjoy doing. Lifting heavy is great, but sometimes you need that variety.

    - **cuttingseason_2024** (score 47, 2026-03-08T08:12:41.774+00:00)
I've seen way more progress in my cuts since switching to a lifting regimen. No doubt about it, calisthenics has its place for functional fitness, but heavy lifting is where the real gains happen, especially when you track ur macros right.

- **squat_to_pizza** (score 3, 2026-03-08T17:35:30.474+00:00)
Ngl, sometimes I just want to do pull-ups and pretend I'm a superhero, but heavy lifts for hypertrophy are just the way to go. I'm all for some gains with pizza on the side, but give me those weights!

  - **running_sucks_bro** (score 0, 2026-03-08T16:11:45.295+00:00)
Yep, calisthenics might work for some, but for hypertrophy, you gotta put in the work with weights. You can't just float around hoping for gains, you need that heavy iron. That's the only way to grow!
